Cette enquête de la BBC révèle l’impact de la pollution atmosphérique sur les enfants (et la planète), causée par les champs pétroliers du sud de l'Irak. Autour de la ville de Bassorah, les flammes et la fumée des torchères sont visibles à l'horizon. Malgré la législation interdisant le torchage (la combustion des excédents de gaz issus de la production pétrolière) à moins de 10 km des habitations, de nombreux habitants vivent bien plus près. La BBC a constaté que les taux de cancer, en particulier de leucémie, chez les enfants de la région sont considérablement élevés. En collaboration avec un scientifique local, des échantillons d'air et d'urine sont prélevés afin de déterminer si les torchères pourraient en être responsables. L'enquête révèle également que les grandes compagnies pétrolières n'incluent souvent pas le torchage de ces champs irakiens dans leurs émissions de gaz à effet de serre.
Lauréat de sept récompenses dont RTS, FPA, AIB, DIG, ce film a été réalisé par Jess Kelly (lauréate du Rory Peck Trust 2023) et produit par Owen Pinnell. « Under Poisoned Skies » a fourni la base juridique du premier procès contre le géant pétrolier BP intenté par un particulier au sujet des pratiques de torchage toxiques de l'entreprise en Irak.
A BBC Arabic investigation reveals the deadly impact of toxic air pollution on children and the planet from oil fields in southern Iraq. Around the city of Basra flames and smoke from gas flares are visible right across the horizon. Despite laws that say flaring – the burning off of excess gas from oil production – should not happen within 10km of people’s homes, many local residents live much closer than that. The BBC has found that the rates of cancer, particularly leukaemia, in children living in the area are significantly elevated. Working with a local scientist, air and urine samples are taken to see if the gas flares might be responsible. The investigation also finds that the major oil companies often do not include the flaring from these Iraqi fields in their greenhouse gas emissions.

'Under Poisoned Skies' provided the legal basis for the first ever lawsuit against the oil giant BP brought by an individual over the company's toxic flaring practices in Iraq.

This BBC Arabic investigation has found that harmful air pollution from big companies including BP and ADNOC is spreading far from their oil fields in the Gulf.
